Barrel finishing is the process of transferring mature whiskey into a second barrel that previously held another spirit or wine. During that additional aging period, the whiskey picks up subtle flavors and aromas from the cask — adding entirely new layers of character while still preserving the base whiskey underneath.

Different finishing barrels can dramatically influence the final profile, bringing everything from fruit and sweetness to smoke, spice, or wine-like richness.

 We’ve recently filled Chardonnay barrels, sherry casks, and even a Laphroaig Scotch barrel with whiskey for future North Fork Blue Label releases.

The inspiration for Glacier Dew goes back more than a century to Josephine Doody, a resourceful moonshiner who operated from her homestead in Glacier National Park until 1928. Her independent spirit and commitment to craft still influence how we approach distilling today.

It’s one of the most common questions we get — especially in the summer, when Montana smells like pine needles and sunscreen and someone inevitably shows up with purple-stained fingers from picking those delicious beauties.

So eventually, we stopped answering the question and started working on the solution.

Wild Huck was created by popular demand.

Not because flavored vodka is trendy. Not because every other shelf has one. But because the people who drink our spirits kept asking for a version that felt like us — clean, balanced, and actually Montana.

At Glacier Distilling, our whiskey doesn’t just age it evolves with the mountain seasons. Right now, our barrels are in their long, cold rest, and winter is doing its quiet work.

Distillers call this barrel season, when colder temps slow the whiskey’s movement in the barrel, helping flavors settle and integrate. It’s a slower rhythm, but one that builds depth and character.
